You Can Extend The Time Between Carpet Cleanings With These Tips

Posted on: 30 December 2019

Most carpet cleaning companies recommend that you get your carpets cleaned once every 6 to 12 months. If you are on a tight budget, this recommendation can feel a little less than realistic. Does that mean you shouldn't clean your carpets or that you should let them become completely soiled between cleaning appointments? No. There are ways to take better care of your carpet and extend the time between cleanings without the carpet really suffering.

1. Keep your home's humidity down.

Nothing soils a carpet faster than high humidity inside a home. It may initially sound strange that moisture can have such a profound impact, but think about it this way: moisture causes mold to breed. Even if you don't end up with a whole mold infestation, smaller amounts may grow in your carpet and contribute to its soiling. Moisture also encourages dirt to stick on the carpet and be harder to remove with just a vacuum cleaner. Using a whole-home or even a portable dehumidifier to keep your indoor relative humidity to between 45 and 55 percent will help you to go longer between carpet cleaning sessions.

2. Vacuum every other day.

Dirt initially sits on top of the carpet. If you remove it at this stage, it won't find its way further down. Try vacuuming your carpet every other day or even every day if you can find the time. This will keep so much dirt from settling deeper in between the carpet fibers where only a carpet cleaner (not a vacuum) can remove it.

3. Keep pets off the carpet.

As much as possible, try to keep your pets off the carpet. Restrict them to parts of the home with hard floors by using baby gates. If this is difficult because of the layout of your home, then at least keep your pets off the carpet when their feet are muddy. Pet hair and dirt they bring in on their paws is one of the biggest sources of carpet soiling, so if you can address and eliminate this, you can go longer between cleanings.

4. Hire a top-notch cleaning company.

Make sure the company you hire uses high-powered equipment and steam to extract as much dirt from the carpet as possible. The cleaner it gets, the longer you'll be able to wait before having to clean it again.
